Simplified Interconnection Procedures To install a small renewable system (under 10kW for single-phase service and less than 25 KW for three-phase electric service* with UL1741 certified inverters) please complete the following:
  1. Fill the Simplified Interconnection Application (SIA).
    1. If the customer is in need of new service, please apply here and then provide Distributed Generation with the account number. Also, all of the service documents can be found in one location.
  2. Customers qualifying for Net Metering, please complete our Schedule B.
  3. When the retail customer (Electric Account Owner) is not the owner and/or operator of the distributed generation, Exhibit H agreement has to be filled and signed.
  4. Email National Grid at  [email protected] a signed copy of SIA, Schedule B, a copy of the electric bill (existing customer only**), a non P.E. stamped electrical one-line diagram, and Exhibit H (when applicable).
  5. The cities in the downtown districts of Pawtucket or Providence have networks. Customers could refer to the Network Maps link on the left side of this page to view maps of National Grids Secondary Area Network Maps, before starting your project to see if you could potentially be interconnecting to a network. If in a network, Distributed Generation would be willing to do a study of your site.
  6. National Grid will communicate with the contacts listed on the SIA about the status of the application.
  7. Contractors and customers should refer to Electric System Bulletin (ESB) 756 for a more detailed and technical guideline of the interconnection process: ESB 756
  8. After you receive the approval to install from National Grid, please fill out the Certificate of Completion (COC) and have it signed by the local wiring inspector after the system is installed.
  9. Submit all documents requested for Final Approval. Checklist of Items Required for Final Approval process is sent to customer along with signed Interconnection Service Agreement. Below is a sample Checklist:
    1. The Certificate of Completion, signed by the local wiring inspector or accompanied with a copy of the permit signed by the local wiring inspector must be emailed to National Grid.
    2. Send a close up and a wide angle picture of the utility meter, the generator (Inverter), the utility disconnect and the current limiting device (fuse or circuit breaker) that clearly shows the correct plaque as described in NEC 705.10 , 705.12 (7), 690.56, 692.4 and 705.70 installed when applicable. The utility disconnect shall have the following label "National Grid Utility Disconnect" in addition to the NEC requirements. Utility meter should be labeled National Grid Utility Meter to avoid any confusion with other customer owned meter.
    3. One copy of Schedule B must be signed and emailed to National Grid if the customer qualifies in Net Metering.
  10. National Grid will review the final approval documents and send a notification to customer informing him that all requirements have been met or additional information is required.
  11. Once all final approval documents are accepted, National Grid will issue a meter replacement order when required.
  12. After the new adequate meter is installed, National will send out the Authority to Interconnect. Customer can turn on the generating system at this point.
